Vehicle Description 1962 Mercedes 220S Fin-tail Sedan, RARE SUNROOF, totally rust free, one owner for 55 years, handsome Ivory paint, excellent chrome and trim, immaculate Red interior with gorgeous wood trim, 2.
2 Liter 110HP 6-cylinder engine, 4-speed transmission, Becker Mexico AM/FM radio, power antenna, original books, fully serviced by retired Mercedes mechanic including new tires, brakes, suspension and much more, runs and drives beautifully, absolutely fabulous! This car was ordered new by Oscar Richter through the European Delivery program and picked up in Stuttgart a few days after it was built in August, 1961, The build date is August 18, 1961.
The first service was at Karl Lutz Autohaus in Bolingen, Germany at 696 miles.
Oscar Richter was a German engineer who immigrated to the US in the 1950's with his best friend, another German engineer.
He settled in the Rochester, NY area and opened Oscar Richter Precision Instruments.
He and his friend, Rolf Schneider, relocated their businesses to Asheville, NC, sometime after 1984.
Service records available show Mercedes dealer services up to 36,092 miles in 1975 and a service in North Carolina on 7/27/87 at 76,071 miles.
It was driven just over 1,000 miles between then and when Oscar died sometime in the early 90s, leaving the car to his friend Rolf in 1994.
Rolf had new tires put on it and parked the car in his garage.
According to Rolf's daughter he never drove the car after that except to have it inspected.
Inspection records show it was driven 39 miles from 1994 until 1997, presumably from Rolf's house to the inspection station and back.
The car was purchased from Rolf's estate by a retired Mercedes mechanic and marque expert and re-commissioning was commenced in September 2017 and completed in August 2021.
This car is nearly 100% original.
There is evidence of some paint work in the distant past.
The body is absolutely rust free.
The interior is perfect except for some wear in the driver's floor mat.
Included is a European version tube Becker Mexico AM/FM radio which works exceptionally well, pulling in many stations across the dial with it's signal seeking function.
Oddly, the build sheet shows that the car was delivered with no radio.
In that it is a Euro version radio Victor probably bought and installed it after picking up the car in Germany.
A correct Hirschmann power antenna has been installed in place of the original manual antenna.
Following is a list of work performed and parts replaced in the re-commissioning of the car:
